Symeon of Bulgaria

Symeon of Bulgaria
   Tsar of Bulgaria (qq.v.) from 893-927; son of Boris (q.v.). He was, like Krum and Samuel (qq.v.), among the great Bulgarian adversaries of Byzantium (q.v.). Educated in Constantinople (q.v.), he strove repeatedly for supremacy in the Balkan Peninsula (q.v.), winning victories on several occasions, including the battle of Achelous, near Anchialos in Thrace (qq.v.), where he annihilated a Byzantine army on 20 August 917. His goal was to capture Constantinople and unite the two states. Romanos I (q.v.) was as unsuccessful in dealing with Symeon as was the previous regency headed by Nicholas I Mystikos (q.v.). However, only the sudden death of Symeon in 927 produced peace, negotiated by Symeon's son Peter of Bulgaria (q.v.).
